Zusammenfassung:The use of alumina-supported active MnO2 to oxidize benzoin to benzil is described. The advantages of this reagent include ease of handling and separation from the product and lower toxicity than previously reported supported oxidizing agents. The product is purified by elution through a simple chromatography column consisting of a silica gel-packed Pasteur pipet. Students' yields are comparable to yields from other reported oxidation methods.
