Zusammenfassung: | The gelation of poly(vinyl alcohol), PVA, with sodium tetraborate decahydrate (borax) to produce "slime" is a popular chemistry demonstration. Since the borate serves to cross-link the PVA, the degree of cross-linking can be varied by changing the borate concentration. McLaughlin et al detail the three stages of experiment that include to destroy an increasing fraction of the cross-links by increasing the amount of a strong acid added to the gels across the series--essentially titrating the gel. |
