Asbestos exposure increases human bronchial epithelial cell fibrinolytic activity

To investigate the role of the epithelium in asbestos-induced lung injury, a cell culture model of the human airway was used. It was found that following exposure to chrysotile asbestos, epithelial cell monolayers demonstrate significant increases in their ability to digest plasma clots.
