description | YAO S. and L IU J. (1998) Economic reforms and regional segmentation in rural China, Reg. Studies 32, 735-746. Strong growth in agriculture, industries and services in rural China over the last 18 years has been accompanied by increased spatial income inequality. This paper investigates how reforms and rapid economic growth have resulted in such a regional divide. It concludes that government policy and uneven development of non-farm activities are major factors to blame, pointing out that rather than allowing massive migration, creating jobs for people is a better long term strategy to reduce regional inequality.
