The main body of the book deals with his leadership, from 1945 to 1974, that transformed a conventional children's hospital of that era into a center of research, both basic, and in current terms, translational. In addition to his personal research focus, he fostered the development of other subspecialty areas in the department: hematology, oncology, infectious diseases, allergy, endocrinology, nephrology, metabolism, genetics, neonatology, cardiology, pulmonary, gastroenterology, psychiatry, and adolescent medicine.
