Zusammenfassung:'The Youth Drug Detoxification and Stabilization Act' came into effect on April 1, 2006 to address what the legislature identified as a severe substance abuse problem among Saskatchewan youth. Although the legislation is "meant to be used only as a last resort," it has not been received without controversy, as reflected by opinions written by the Saskatchewan Information Privacy Commissioner and the Saskatchewan Children's Advocate Office. Essentially, the YDDSA removes the youth's right to refuse apprehension, assessment by a physician, and confinement, all of which are ordered so that the youth can detoxify and stabilize. Upon release from confinement, it is hoped that the youth will pursue treatment for his or her substance abuse problem within the community.
