Zusammenfassung: | The intent of the conference, Metis People in the 21st Century, for which this article was originally prepared, was to provide an opportunity to discuss concepts of Metis identity, legitimacy of political representation, and the historical, social, and constitutional foundation of Metis identity and rights. Further, it was intended to be a forum for the discussion of policy and practical considerations for negotiating and maintaining an appropriate place for the Metis in a democratic Canadian society. As such, it allowed Metis participants to contribute to the historic efforts of their ancestors and leaders who have for more than a century sought formal recognition of their inherent and now constitutional rights. |
