Claude McMillan, Jr. has written a book which will be treasured by students and analysts in management science and operations research. The student with the proverbial 'year of calculus' really can pick this book up and, in an hour or two, obtain a conceptual understanding of geometric programming, branch and bound, or virtually any other area of mathematical programming. Of course, to gain the ability to solve actual problems requires closer study. The chapters can be read independently by those with a knowledge of differential calculus; for others there are introductory chapters on properties of functions and derivatives.
