A note on energy requirements Calculations using the 1968 and 1974 UK input-output tables

Input-output data are useful when studying the way the economy uses fuels. For the UK there are now two well-based sets of input-output tables available which permit the allocation of total fuel use in 1968 and 1974 to the production of 90 commodities. This paper reports some results using these data sets, relating the situation in 1968 and 1974 with respect to: the primary energy requirements of commodities; the ranking of commodities by primary energy intensity; the impact on the relative prices of commodities of primary fuel price increases; and the roundaboutness of electricity use in the production of commodities.
