"Slumdog Millionaire," directed by Danny Boyle with Loveleen Tandan, combines family melodrama, criminal detective, and adventure novel into one film, as it examines the lives of three young characters who live in Indian slums and have tragic pasts. Simon Beaufoy's script, which adapts a novel by Vikas Swarup's, also mixes in elements of mass contemporary culture, including television reality shows that are seen as real life. Boyle's view is that of an outsider, and the movie feels like a synthetic extract of epic comics.
