Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement: Measuring Children's Reading Development Using Leveled Texts

Many districts and states have designed individually administered reading assessments for children who are beginning to read. These tests usually cover letter knowledge, phonological awareness, word recognition, and oral-reading fluency. One way to measure reading development is to use the same texts during each test and to measure the increases in reading rate, accuracy, fluency, comprehension and retelling on the texts.
