When, in 1867, the leading Hungarian scholars of history established the Hungarian Historical Society, and launched the journal Századok, they were convinced that the writing of true history was inseparable from the archives. The author seeks to answer the question of whether the Hungarian archives did meet the expectations formulated by the founding fathers of the Society and Századok. He also addresses the problem of what role is assumed by the archives in today’s world of digital database constructions, with special regard to the Hungarian National Archives.
