Zusammenfassung: | The study treats a special case of the refugee problem in Hungary during World War II: the story of Polish military and civil refugees who arrived in Hungary in the fall of 1939, after the collapse of the Polish army. These refugees, including Jews, were given substantially different treatment by the Hungarian state organs than were Jewish refugees coming to the country to escape Nazi persecution. Since the topic of Polish military and civil refugees has already been extensively studied, this study will analyze the case of Polish refugees exclusively in the context of Jewish refugee affairs. A comparison of the Hungarian authorities’ treatment of Polish military and civil refugees who arrived in Hungary in the fall of 1939 with that of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution offers considerable insight into the contemporary political elite’s attitude toward Jewish refugees. |
