Navigating the active learning swamp

Johnson and Malinowski surveyed 29 fellow faculty asking them to define active learning, to rate how effectively different teaching techniques contribute to active learning, and to list the 3 teaching techniques they use most frequently. The authors conclude that active learning requires establishing an environment rather than simply employing a specific teaching technique.
