In the 1998 American Historical Association Presidential Address, Appleby analyzes the succession of criticisms and challenges to conventionl historical writing that historians have been grappling with during the last 40 years. She aruges that historians who have explored the new social history, the social construction of reality, and the role of ideology and postmodernist critiques of Western discourse have greatly enhanced understanding of how knowledge is created.
