Zusammenfassung: | Females of many species of birds possess either a reduced version of male ornaments or conspicuous but hidden ornaments. No female specific ornament display has been described previously in a species with reduced or hidden female ornaments. We describe such a display in Northern Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis). The display consists of a perched female rotating her wings open to expose the red, carotenoid-pigmented underwing coverts, which are indicative of individual quality in this species.
