First admission
. A 66-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of fever, sweats, and diarrhea.
He was well until three months earlier, when diarrhea began and gradually worsened. Two months before entry, night sweats developed. The patient traveled to the Caribbean area, where he experienced marked anorexia and drenching night sweats; the diarrhea became more profuse and malodorous, and he occasionally observed bright-red blood dripping into the toilet after the passage of stools. Fever developed. He lost 14 kg in weight during the six weeks before entry to the hospital.
