Alcohol induces alveolar macrophage oxidative stress by down-regulating the expression of Nox1-related microRNA-1264

Alcohol abuse increases risk of respiratory infections through impaired lung immunity mediated by enhanced alveolar macrophage (AM) oxidative stress, which results in phagocytic dysfunction. NADPH oxidase (Nox) protein activation is a primary source of oxidative stress in the AM. Since microRNA (miR...

Zusammenfassung:Alcohol abuse increases risk of respiratory infections through impaired lung immunity mediated by enhanced alveolar macrophage (AM) oxidative stress, which results in phagocytic dysfunction. NADPH oxidase (Nox) protein activation is a primary source of oxidative stress in the AM. Since microRNA (miR)-1264 putatively targets Nox1 for destabilization, we hypothesize that chronic ethanol (EtOH) exposure down-regulates miR-1264 expression, leading to increased Nox1 activity in AM.
