In Bayreuth, after the withdrawal of the Heiner Muller staging of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, Wagnerians have been looking forward to an even newer vision on this doomed medieval romance. Working with designer Erich Wonder, Muller had presented a Cornwall-bound ship that was nothing more than rectangles of light on the stage floor. Among others, David Pountney's Faust in Munich, also conceived some seasons ago was a farrago of irrelevant images and symbols that cluttered the stage, obstructed the actor/singers, and confused the spectators. |
