Vitamin D and the Dual Processes of Intestinal Calcium Absorption

It is well accepted that the intestinal absorption of calcium occurs by two distinct mechanisms, a saturable active transport process and a nonsaturable passive diffusion process. The relative importance of these two processes and their vitamin D dependency was the subject of recent debates. Here, Wasserman discusses several arguments agreeing as well as disagreeing to these two processes.
