"Infinite riches in a little room": the music collections in the Pierpont Morgan Library

The Pierpont Morgan Library has been very fortunate in attracting donors. Its music collection is largely the result of two major gifts from two donors, Mrs. Mary Flagler Cary and Dannie and Hettie Heineman, plus a handful of smaller contributions. Major gifts to the institution have not dwindled since 1988 although the library has experienced a significant decrease in major acquisitions during the same period as little money has been added to its modest purchasing budget.
