Beschreibung
Zusammenfassung:Reviews a collection of correspondence (Scarecrow Press, 1991, 340p, $37.50) drawn from archives of Guido Adler and Olin Downes held at the University of Georgia, centered for the most part around letters from Schoenberg concerning music for the cello, principally the concerto "recomposed" after a cello concerto by Matthias Georg Monn. Explains that Adler, a musicologist at the University of Vienna in Austria, interested Schoenberg in composing realizations of Baroque cello music, resulting in the composition of the concerto offered to Casals but eventually premiered by Feuermann. Finds the letters and documents relating to Downes, music critic of the "New York Times," out of place and suggests they should have been excluded. Finds this a peripheral piece of Schoenberg scholarship, though as a primary source it should still be part of a large research library's collections.
