Toward a Bibliography of Operas on Columbus: A Quincentennial Checklist

Attempts to assemble a comprehensive bibliography of musical works and operas commemorating Christopher Columbus's voyages and discovery of America are traced. The earliest attempts were made in the late 19th century by Henry E. Krehbiel. Important contributions were added by Piero Carboni, Giuliano Balestri and H. Earl Johnson. The development of on-line bibliographic searching and the CD-ROM serve to facilitate the creation and accessibility of such bibliographic information. A bibliography of selected works from 1691 to 1992 is included.
