Some of her research interests include the role of natural resources in state-building, the history of energy, the history of the oil industry, foreign policy, imperial Russian and Soviet history, and the history of the Caucasus.Jessica Merrill is Assistant Professor in the Department of Slavic Languages at Columbia University.A historical sociologist by training, she specializes in nationalisms in modern South Asia, gender / feminist theory, postcolonial studies, transnational migration, global labor history, critical development studies, and the politics of methods.
