Unusual Metabolic Shifts in Fasting Hummingbirds

Chaui-Berlinck and Bicudo measured the oxygen consumption and carbon-dioxide production of a Brazilian hummingbird species using an open-flow respirometry system to determine the kinds of substrate used by hummingbirds during prolonged periods of fasting to sustain their basic energy needs.
