Zusammenfassung:As in most member states of the European Union, the Spanish private health insurance market has recently become one of the main sectors within the insurance industry. Its development must be seen both in the context of the insurance industry and of the evolution of the public health care system, with relevant economic, social and political consequences. The main objective of this study is to show the most significant factors that determine the private health insurance demand. In order to do so, a probit model is assumed using the 1998 European Union Household Panel’s data for Spain, which explains the Spanish households’ purchases of health insurance services. Our research shows the significance of the household’s health state and consumption of sanitary resources, together with the socio-demographic and economic variables of its head of family
