Thomas Jefferson and the Virginia State Capitol

Because he, like no other Virginian of his time, understood the symbolic importance of public architecture, Thomas Jefferson made several unsuccessful attempts to move the state's capital from the uninspiring Williamsburg. Jefferson's plans for a new Virginia capitol are examined.
