Zusammenfassung:By drawing upon the concept of competitiveness and the competency approach, a conceptual model is developed to link the characteristics of small and medium-sized enterprises' (SMEs') owner–managers and their firms' performance together. The model consists of four constructs of competitive scope, organizational capabilities, entrepreneurial competencies and performance. The central focus of the model is the three entrepreneurial tasks that link different competency areas with other constructs of competitiveness. Propositions related to these relationships are made. The model suggests further research in different competency areas, interindustry comparisons, and validating studies.
