Zusammenfassung:A review of the situation of old people in Britain today raises most of the issues being debated in relation to the welfare state as a whole. The main ones are (1) the adequacy of public provisions in relation to need; (2) the problems of coordination of services designed to meet different, but essentially interrelated, needs; (3) the reconciliation of conflicts of interest between administrators, professionals, and beneficiaries; and (4) the philosophy of public services in an affluent society-or the principle of universal as against selective provision.
