“Music For the Masses”: Milton Babbitt's Cold War Music Theory

Along with such images of heroism, exploration, intransigence and insanity, Milton Babbitt has argued for and exemplified a special relationship between music theory and composition. Babbitt's important metatheoretical papers that began to appear in the late 1950s on this subject are discussed.
