Commentary on Carnoy

[The article presents] a brief critical commentary on Martin Carnoy's address. Carnoy has a formidable international reputation as a comparativist and economist, and his work stand on this reputation, to be used and honored by those who have followed his career. In the present commentary, [the authors] take issue with some of his words in his presidential address. ... Martin Carnoy's presidential address contributes to the scholarly advancement of [comparative education] field in several ways: his recommendations on ways to engage in comparative education research, from individual country case studies to the analysis of large international data sets, as well as his persuasive arguments concerning the importance of state theory for viewing educational phenomena, especially in regard to the forces of globalization.
