Growth of platinum fibers using the micro-pulling-down method

Platinum (Pt) crystalline fibers were grown from the melt by the micro-pulling-down (μ-PD) method using the ZrO2 ceramics crucible. The diameter of the grown Pt fiber was controlled by the ϕ1 mm outlet made at the bottom of the crucible and the Pt fiber of 0.95±0.03mm in diameter and over 5m in leng...

Zusammenfassung:Platinum (Pt) crystalline fibers were grown from the melt by the micro-pulling-down (μ-PD) method using the ZrO2 ceramics crucible. The diameter of the grown Pt fiber was controlled by the ϕ1 mm outlet made at the bottom of the crucible and the Pt fiber of 0.95±0.03mm in diameter and over 5m in length was obtained at 10mm/min pulling-down rate. In addition, the Pt fiber was grown at 1–110mm/min pulling rates while the liquid-solid interface reached the bottom of the crucible and the crystal growth became unstable at 120mm/min pulling rate. Few grain boundaries were observed in the scanning electron microscopy image of the Pt fibers and there were some spots with high intensity in the pole figures. •ϕ 1mm diameter Pt fibers were grown by using micro-pulling-down method.•The grown Pt fibers had few grain boundaries observed by scanning electron microscopy.•The pole figure measurements showed that the grown Pf fibers had single-crystal-like structure.•The FWHM of the XRC was measured to be around 4000″ at the reflection from the plane (111) at 2θ =39.3°.
