Rationale: The tragic case of Rory Staunton, an otherwise healthy adolescent who died of septic shock after presenting to an adult community hospital in 2012, galvanized broad policy changes for hospital care of sepsis across the US. Methods: We identified encounters involving patients aged 12 to 17 years old who presented to the emergency department between 2010 and 2012 using the electronic health record data from 12 adult, community and academic hospitals.
