Rationale: The use of inhaled hypertonic saline is a well-established component of the standard treatment regimen for cystic fibrosis patients, including those with severe airflow obstruction. Various studies have examined the safety of inhaled normal, 3%, and 5% saline for sputum induction in COPD, but there are few data describing the safety of 7% hypertonic saline use for therapy in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
