Zusammenfassung: | Despite its conventional superiority over Russia, NATO is strengthening its military presence on its Eastern flank. After the enhancement of the NATO Response Force this is now being done by a forward deployment of combat forces. All of this is done within the framework of a general revitalisation oft the concept of (nuclear) deterrence, which was prevailing for the most time of the Cold War. In this context the remaining US tactical nuclear weapons in Europe, including those in Germany, are supposed to be replaced by strategic ones. The German government has virtually commited to participate in this undertaking by signing the Warsaw Summit Communiqué, issued on 9 July 2016, as well as in the Weißbuch 2016. |
