Zusammenfassung:New opportunities for international migration, especially migration for employment, arose since Bangladesh gained independence in 1971. Temporary labor migration is mostly to countries in the Middle East and South-East Asia while the United Kingdom and the United States of America are the major destinations for permanent migration. The Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET), the implementing arm of the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, collects basic statistics on international labor migration. Aside from documenting labor outflows, BMET has started to develop a database on return migration. Some suggestions for collaborative work involving government agencies, academia and NGOs are presented.
