Zusammenfassung:Historical details make Daniel R. Block and Howard B. Rosings Chicago: A Food Biography shine. When asked about living in Chicago, I mention two things: first, its socioeconomic, racial and ethnic diversity played out spatially, the conflicts of which are frequently broadcasted, and second, I talk about food. Food in Chicago seems a proxy for the city itself: Diverse, unique, at turns coarse and opulent. Block and Rosing, Chicago academics and residents, a geographer and a cultural anthropologist respectively, invite readers to engage their city through the history, infrastructure and spatial landscape of food. More than a culinary history tour, however, the volume offers a fascinating view of the city's food traditions via community engagement, as both authors are active in neighborhood development and experiential learning.
