A 34-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of a painful left sacral and gluteal mass.
There was a long history of low-back pain that was aggravated by lifting. X-ray films of the lumbar spine, obtained at this hospital 4 1/2 years before entry, were interpreted as normal except for straightening shown in the lateral view. Nineteen months before admission pain developed in the left hip, left buttock, and lumbosacral region and worsened progressively.
