A 58-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of recurrent confusional episodes.
She was well until four years earlier, when she began to experience occasional episodes of confusion during which she was unable to perform or to continue tasks for several seconds; the episodes subsided spontaneously and occurred five times in two years. The attacks were not accompanied by palpitation or sweating. During some episodes the patient repeated the same question as many as 30 times, although it had been answered each time.
