The fellowship supports advanced research related to all aspects of space history leading to publication on the history of space technology broadly considered, including cultural and intellectual history, institutional history, economic history, history of law and public policy, and history of engineering and management. The second book project, Mask Work: Intellectual Property and the History of Semiconductor Chips, will use intellectual property law as a tool to focus on labor and material culture, including the visual culture of the images used to produce computer chips. From that start, Kline's ties to IEEE grew long and deep; he served as president of the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology during 1991-92 and later was editor in chief of IEEE Technology and Society Magazine, from 1995 to 1997. Since 1998, he has continuously served as a member of the Publications Committee of the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology.
