Zusammenfassung:The corporate capital is considered a key element in promoting economic development of countries and regions. Depending on the relevance of forming new businesses for growth and regional development, and the alleged importance of corporate structure in the future formation of new companies, this article aims to relate the rate of formation of new businesses with local business structure of cities in the state. Empirical evidence applied to Rio Grande do Sul suggests that the formation of companies is stimulated in regions with a higher proportion of small businesses. However, unlike previous studies, our results also show that this relationship is more complex, showing a behavior of a curve of type U. In other words, the formation of new firms increases not only stimulated regions where there are small companies as well as when there is growth in the proportion of large companies in the region.
