Making Pathogens Visible: A Fluorescent Marker Used as a Feedback Training Tool to Improve Cleaning of Shared Portable Medical Equipment

In hospitals, a variety of re-useable equipment are in contact with multiple patients each day. Pathogens can contaminate equipment surfaces. While equipment should be wiped down with disinfectant between each use, such cleaning has not been reliably incorporated into hospital practices. To raise awareness, an invisible fluorescent ink is in use in an interventional study at our hospital to promote equipment cleaning.
