Gene therapy of the lung, especially the distal lung, is problematic in part because it is difficult to reach appropriate target cells. Vectors suspended in saline may distribute unevenly, and not reach atelectatic or injured airways.Perfluorochemical liquids (PFCs) are inert compounds with high oxygen solubility that are eliminated from lung by evaporation. PFCs have been shown to distribute protein and rAd more evenly throughout lung and distal airways.
