The first catalytic annulation between two structurally different diazo compounds is described by M.P. Doyle and co-workers in their Communication on page5573ff. To a solution of one commercially available dirhodium catalyst, two easily accessible diazocarbonyl compounds (represented by fallen leaves) were added that underwent dinitrogen extrusion (bubbles) and further transformation to furnish three natural-product-related ring systems (the fish).
