Zusammenfassung:Folic acid (pteroylmonoglutamic acid) is a provitamin and, as such, is itself inactive, but it is chemically reduced first to dihydrofolate and then to tetrahydrofolate in passage through the liver. 2 The first of these reductions is slow and may be overwhelmed; as a consequence, unreduced folic acid enters the circulatory system and then tissue and is polyglutamated, stored and may compete with 'natural' folates.
