Esta nueva definición de "lo cubano" que excluye lo racial del imaginario nacional ha sido advertida por la crítica en la obra de Ríos, "[e]vidently, Ríos is more concerned with female subjectivity, desire and the subconscious than the African or Caribbean cultural and literary traditions" (Davies, A Place 140).2 No obstante, no es necesario el tratamiento explícito del tema por parte de la poeta para distinguir en su primer cuaderno de los ochenta, Entre mundo y juguete y en los que lo siguen, una representación de su "ser mujer negra" que pone en duda la homogeneidad pretendida. Según la investigadora afronorteamericana, "[a]lthough contemporary thinking about black female bodies does not attempt to read the body as a sign of "natural" racial inferiority, the fascination with black pornographic imagination, the protruding butt is seen as an indication of a heightened sexuality" (63).
