Our USIS Kampala Library

The British Council (an independent British government body, but similar to my own outfit, the United States Information Agency, organized a book fair annually. (The U.S. Information Agency, USIA , is called the U.S. Information Service overseas to avoid nominal confusion with the CIA, though many people I met still assumed all American Embassy employees were spies.) Reading books from the Canton Branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore was a big part of my education and helped me to eventually wind up in the U.S. Foreign Service.
