Using antibiotics in suspected haemolytic-uraemic syndrome

In our patient the diagnosis of sepsis with consumptive coagulopathy could not be excluded on presentation (international normalised ratio 1.9, prothrombin time 20.9 s, activated particular thromboplastin time 41.6 s, fibrinogen 4.5 g/l, D-dimers > 10 000, haemoglobin 78 g/l, white blood cell count 38.2x109/l, neutrophils 30x109/l, platelets 67 x 109/l).
