The evaluation of healthcare coverage is a Unified Health System management tool in the municipality. This study aimed to evaluate the healthcare coverage and the production of the Health System from a southern micro-region of Minas Gerais in the period between 2009 and 2013. This is a quantitative, descriptive, exploratory and retrospective research. The phases were: data collection, tabulation and data analysis. The results indicate a surplus in the production of emergency medical appointments and medical specialties, and a lower production in primary healthcare. An inversion was verified in relation to user access and medical appointment productivity. It is concluded that the reduction in the coverage of primary healthcare made it clear that production did not achieve the parameters recommended by the Ministry of Health, which evidences non-conformity of the primary healthcare units as a gateway for the municipal health system.
