For some people who came of age at the end of the civil rights and Black Power movement and during the ride of neoliberalism and Reaganomics, and ultimately experienced the undoing of many of the government programs, policies--and politics--that were hard fought and won in the 1960s and 1970s, black studies, as it was taught to people in colleges and universities around the country in the 1980s, was always already in flux.
